Free Traits

Moments when you transcend your trait profile to enact a script that advances a core personal project.

Brian Little's key idea: we are not just a bundle of traits. An agreeable person may act disagreeably to break through hospital administrative torpor for a sick child. An extreme introvert may act extroverted to profess — engaging students with humor at 8am because the core project (teaching, loving the field) demands it.

Cost of Protracted Performance

Acting out of character for too long without recovery is dangerous. After pseudo-extroverted professing, Little needs restorative solitude. Susan Cain's Quiet chapter notes his men's-room retreats from "outrageous extroverts."

Free traits are strategic, not fake — but they require restorative niches afterward.

The Better Question

Don't ask "what type are you?" Ask "what are your core projects?" Traits describe tendencies; free traits show what you will override them for.

Connections

  • personal-projects — free traits serve core projects
  • introversion-extroversion — most vivid examples are introverts acting extroverted
  • big-five-personality — traits are the baseline free traits temporarily violate
  • grit — overlapping surface behavior; free traits are project-driven, grit is perseverance — distinguish by restoration need
