Goldilocks Rule
Peak motivation occurs when working on tasks of "just manageable difficulty" — approximately 4% beyond your current ability. Too easy and you get bored. Too hard and you get anxious. The Goldilocks zone keeps you engaged.
The Mechanism
- Below the zone: behavior becomes automatic, attention drifts, no improvement happens (this is the danger of habits without deliberate practice)
- In the zone: challenging enough to demand focus, achievable enough to sustain effort — flow state territory
- Above the zone: overwhelm, anxiety, flailing without feedback
This is Clear's restatement of the "just beyond" criterion in deliberate practice. The same idea appears in Csikszentmihalyi's flow research: the flow channel sits between boredom and anxiety.
Habits + Goldilocks = Mastery
Habits handle the routine. The Goldilocks Rule handles the frontier. The formula:

Without habits, you waste energy on basics. Without deliberate practice at the Goldilocks edge, habits stagnate into comfortable repetition. Both are needed.

The Greatest Threat
The greatest threat to success is not failure but boredom. As habits become routine, the initial excitement fades. The ability to keep going when the work is no longer novel — to "fall in love with boredom" — separates professionals from amateurs.
Variable rewards partially solve this: the brain stays engaged when outcomes vary slightly from expectation. But ultimately, sustained effort through boredom is a skill in itself.
