The mind runs two modes of processing, a pedagogical fiction Kahneman uses throughout Thinking, Fast and Slow. System 1 is not a brain region; "System 1 does X" means X occurs automatically.
System 1 is fast, automatic, associative, always on. It pattern-matches, generates intuitions, maintains cognitive ease, and answers substituted questions without announcing the swap (substitution-heuristic). It is the source of skilled performance in stable environments — chess, firefighting in familiar buildings, reading anger on a face.
System 2 is slow, effortful, lazy. It endorses System 1's outputs, rationalizes them, and occasionally overrides — but deploys skepticism unevenly. Pupils dilate; attention narrows. Comparison, choice, and ordered reasoning require it.
The asymmetry that matters
System 1 cannot be turned off. System 2 tires. Most behavior is System 1; System 2 acts as a permissive monitor. Knowing a bias rarely removes it — Kahneman reports his own intuitions stayed biased after decades of study. The realistic gain is recognizing minefields: "this is an anchoring situation," "we need the outside view."
System 1 features — wysiati, intensity matching, associative coherence — produce anchoring, nonregressive prediction, overconfidence. Organizations beat individuals via checklists, premortems, and reference-class forecasting.
In creativity and learning
Kounios maps insight to System 1 and analytical creativity to System 2 — parallel to focused-vs-diffuse-thinking and insight-vs-analytical-thinking, though Kahneman's frame targets judgment error, not learning mode.
