Strategic Self-Deception
Robert Trivers' principle: "We deceive ourselves the better to deceive others."
Self-deception is not accidental. It's adaptive. If others are scanning you for signs of bad faith, the most convincing performance of good faith is to actually believe you have good faith. A brain that knows its own selfish motives leaks that information through micro-expressions, nervous tells, inconsistent stories. A brain that genuinely doesn't know is harder to catch.
The left-brain interpreter
The clearest evidence comes from split-brain patients (Sperry & Gazzaniga). When the right hemisphere causes the left hand to pick up a snow shovel, the left hemisphere — which didn't receive that instruction — immediately generates a plausible explanation: "I wanted to clean up the snow outside." It confabulates. It didn't decide to pick up the shovel; it's constructing a story after the fact.
Normal brains do the same thing. The left-brain interpreter is a narrative machine that produces coherent explanations for behavior it didn't cause. The difference is that in a normal brain, the gap between decision and story is invisible.
The introspection illusion
Emily Pronin: we don't know our own minds nearly as well as we think. Introspection feels authoritative but isn't. Our sense of knowing our own motives is itself a product of the interpreter — it's the story we tell about the story.
Consequence: when people report their motives, they're reporting their interpreter's output, not their actual drives. This doesn't make self-reports useless, but it makes them unreliable, especially when the true motive is socially costly to admit.
Limits
Self-deception isn't total. We have partial access to our motives. Some people are more self-aware than others, and some situations make our motives more visible. But the default is confabulation, and the direction of the bias is consistent: toward prosocial explanations for self-serving behavior.
