Founder Qualities (Paul Graham)

From YC experience, the qualities that predict founder success (above a minimum intelligence threshold).

Core Qualities

  • Determination: most important. Ability to keep going when obstacles appear and bureaucracies try to ignore you out of existence. Not easily demoralized.

  • Flexibility: combine determination with adaptability. Running back model — get downfield by any necessary path, including sideways or back. Willing to abandon or pivot early ideas.

  • Imagination: the intelligence that generates surprising, initially "crazy" ideas that turn out to be on the right side of crazy. Most good ideas look bad at first.

  • Naughtiness: piratical gleam. Care about the big things, not petty rules. Enjoy hacking systems to advantage (in the clever, rule-bending sense).

  • Friendship: co-founder relationships must be genuinely strong. Most successes have 2–3 founders who like each other and work well together. Startups will pull weak relationships apart.

Empirical Notes

Single-founder startups are harder. YC learned to ask specific questions (e.g., time you hacked something) to surface these traits.

Connections

These traits map to generalist/agency practices: unrelenting resourcefulness (determination + naughtiness), doing things that don't scale while staying flexible, and the ability to own projects end-to-end.
